The Shamrock Shuffle, Ten Years and Still Running

By: Joella Baker

10 years ago, I had an idea for a race to be held through the hills of Harmony.  A 10 mile run and a 5K and a 1 mile fun run.  Those who were really ambitious could run all three races.  Strawberry Ridge Golf Course hosted the race and the 10 mile course was one of the toughest around.  People loved the course, the food and the festivities afterwards.  I needed to find a great organization to help.  The Zelienople Rotary Club supports the local community and international projects like the Portersville Food Pantry, student scholarships, and the Honduras Water Project.  This race raises the needed funds to support the Rotary Club and our amazing community.

After 3 years at Strawberry Ridge, local permitting had us looking for a new location for the race.  Harmony Borough graciously welcomed our event.  This required us to look at new courses and an opportunity to revamp the race.  The course was changed from 10 miles to 13.1 miles on the toughest hills in our area.  This included Texter Hill Road.  We wanted to make it fun and festive.  That’s when the Green Beer and Jell-O Shots were introduced at the top of the big climb for the 21 and older crowd looking to make the half marathon a true Irish Celebration.

Of course, this is a family event too.  The kids and those wishing for some shorter distances can race the 5K and the 1 Mile.  We have a race for everyone.  Best of all, each runner in each event receives a custom finisher medal.

The post-race party includes music with Dr. Glo, soup from the Harmony Inn, French Toast from Jenny Lee Bakery Gourmet Swirl Breads, Hot Cocoa from Cocoa Elite, Green Beer from Labatt Premier and pizza, cookies and so much more.

The race will be hosted by Grace Church of Harmony and the Harmony Inn.  The start will be on Mercer Street in the square and the finish line will be at Wood Street Park.  Packet pick-up and race registration will be at Grace Church on Friday, March 16 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM and Saturday morning starting at 6:30 AM.  The Half Marathon will start at 7:30 AM.  The 5K will start at approximately 10:00 AM and the 1 mile will start at approximately 10:45 AM with awards starting around 11:15 AM.  The post-race party will start after the half marathon at 9:30 AM.  Stick around for the party, the festivities and the awards.

Awards will be handed out to overall winners in each race and in age group divisions and to those who run all 3 races.  Award winners will receive a custom glass sponsored by Butler County Tourism and Convention Bureau, the Harmony Inn and Labatt Premier.  Our Finisher Towels will be handed out with the finisher medal and are sponsored by Armstrong.  We couldn’t have this event without our amazing sponsors.

There will be running, there will be hills, there will be green beer, but most of all, there will be fun, laughter and celebration!

Join us on March 17th for the 10th Annual Deep Well Shamrock Shuffle!  Don’t forget to dress up in your best Irish outfit too!
